If we move, this cabinet is coming

I stood in the mudroom this morning with a grocery bag still on my wrist and looked at the wall the way you look at something you have stopped noticing. There is a slim cabinet there. Light wood. Rattan on the fronts. Small silver handles. It looks like a piece we meant to have, the kind you pick because you like it, not because you are trying to solve a problem. It does not look like a shoe rack we were trying to hide, which is funny, because hiding shoes is the entire reason it exists.

We have a small mudroom. Small spaces do not forgive a pile. I used to watch the shoes collect by the door and tell myself I would deal with it later. Later is how you get a morning you already do not like, and a pile that has its own personality, and a moment where you kick something aside just to get the door open. I wanted something that would go on the wall, stay skinny, and not announce itself every time someone walked in. I wanted the floor back, and I wanted the room to still feel like a room.

Which is how the HOPUBUY rattan shoe cabinet ended up on our wall. Three flip drawers. A look that is modern and a little farmhouse at the same time, which is the combination this house seems to want whether I plan for it or not. We mounted it to the wall. We are on year three, and I still like walking in and seeing furniture instead of a situation.

What it actually holds

Each drawer takes about three pairs of adult shoes. The kids’ shoes are smaller, so those drawers take more. Dean is eight and Rey is six, and their shoes do not eat a drawer the way ours do. That is the only math that matters when you are trying to get out the door, and it is the only math I am willing to do before coffee.

You flip the drawer, take the pair, close it. The shoes are not on the floor. They are not in a basket I have to kick aside. They are not the first thing a person sees when they come in, which used to be our signature move, whether I wanted it to be or not.

You cannot tell it is a shoe cabinet besides the fact that it is in our mudroom.

Closed, it is just a narrow piece with rattan fronts. I have walked past it a thousand times without thinking about shoes. That is a compliment I do not hand out lightly. Most storage looks like storage. This one looks like it was always supposed to live on that wall, holding whatever we decided it would hold.

The only complaint

The only complaint I have is that Rey has yanked on the bottom drawer twice, and my husband has had to repair it. I blame her being too rough more than I blame the cabinet. A six-year-old can test a hinge in a way a listing photo never will, usually right when you have decided a thing is finally settled. He fixed it. It is still on the wall. Year three, and I am still not looking for a replacement.

I do not keep things that look cute and then fail the first time a child treats them like a child. This one is sleek enough that I do not apologize for it when someone comes over, and sturdy enough that I still trust it after the drawer got yanked. That is a high bar for a mudroom. It cleared it.

If we move

I have already told my husband that if we move houses, we are unmounting this thing and taking it with us. I do not say that about most furniture. Most furniture I would leave for the next people and start over, because starting over is sometimes easier than packing a life. This one already knows our mudroom. It already holds what we wear. I am not starting over with a pile by the door. I have met that pile. I did not like her.

Small spaces need pieces that do more than one job. This one holds the shoes, keeps the floor clear, and does not make the room look like we gave up. That is a lot to ask of a cabinet. It has done it for three years, quietly, which is my favorite way for a piece of furniture to behave.

Would I buy it again? Yes. We still have the first one, and I have already claimed it in the imaginary moving truck. That is a lot of loyalty for a place we keep sneakers.
