Why I finally wanted an air fryer

Rey asked if the chicken was done yet. She was standing on a chair, looking through the side of the glass, which is not something you can do with a regular air fryer, and she asked it with the particular patience of a child who has already decided she is helping. I said almost, and we both watched the skin go from pale to actually brown. I did not have to open anything. I did not have to guess. We just stood there like it was a tiny window into dinner, which, it turns out, is a very nice way to wait.

I did not want another black box on the counter. I wanted something I could see into, and I wanted the food sitting in glass instead of a scratched nonstick basket I was already a little suspicious of. That is why we got the Ninja Crispi Pro. I have liked it more than I expected to, which is my favorite kind of kitchen surprise. Most appliances arrive with a speech. This one arrived and then quietly started making weeknights easier.

What it actually is

It is a countertop air fryer. The heating head sits on a stand, and you slide the glass underneath. In the box you get a 6-quart and a 2.5-quart, two crisper plates, two lids, and a base that adjusts for the smaller dish. The glass is what Ninja calls CleanCrisp. It can go from the freezer to the counter without the usual panic. The lids mean you can cook, put dinner on the table in the same dish, and store what is left, which is the kind of efficiency I pretend I do not need and then use every time.

There are six functions: Max Crisp, Air Fry, Bake, Roast, Recrisp, and Dehydrate. You can set the temperature. Roast at 375 has become the default for a lot of weeknights, which is a sentence that would have sounded made up to an earlier version of me, the one who thought air fryers were for other people’s kitchens.

What we cook in it

A whole chicken in the big container when I do not want to heat the oven. Wings. Steak. Frozen shrimp, which come out better than they have any right to. And the kids’ frozen things, Dean’s nuggets and Rey’s fries, which is most weeknights if I am being honest. The small dish is the one I reach for then. The 6-quart is when I am feeding all of us. I like that I do not need a second appliance for that. I like that even more on the nights I have already used every other dish in the house.

The part I love is watching it. I can see when the shrimp curl. I can see when the steak is going too far. I do not have to yank a drawer open and lose all the heat. Rey still pulls up the chair. I still let her. It has become a small evening habit I did not plan, and I am not in a hurry to unplan it.

I wanted glass I could see through, and I wanted the food not sitting in a worn basket. That is still why I use it.

Why the glass matters

I got tired of wondering what was coming off a peeling coating. Cooking in glass is the reason this one stayed. Ninja says the glassware is made without PFAS and PTFE. I am not a chemist. I am a person who can see her dinner and is not scraping a basket. That is enough for me, and it is more than I used to ask of a weeknight.

How it compares

A Cosori or Instant Vortex will still hold more fries. If you cook for a crowd every night, that can win. If you want to see the food and cook in glass, this is the one I would buy, and I would buy it again for the chair-and-chicken evenings alone.

The unglamorous part

The glass gets hot. Use the handles. The main unit is not dishwasher-safe. It lives on the counter. I have not minded any of that, which is my way of saying the good parts won, and they won by a lot.

Would I buy it again? Yes. I already talk about it like it has always been here, and Rey already treats the chair like part of the appliance.
