The five-piece uniform that saved my mornings

Jeans, a good tee, a cardigan that hides everything, loafers, one gold necklace. I wear versions of this almost every day and I have never felt more like myself.yself.

A folded oatmeal sweater, jeans, loafers and a gold necklace laid out on a linen bedspread

I own more clothes than this. I want to be clear about that, because the internet is full of women who have thirty perfect items and a color story, and I am not one of them. My closet has plenty of things in it that I like fine and wear twice a year.

But there are five pieces that do about eighty percent of the work, and once I noticed that, my mornings got dramatically shorter.

The five

  • Straight-leg mid-wash jeans. High enough at the waist that I never think about the waist.
  • A white tee that holds its shape. I buy three every August and retire them in June without ceremony.
  • The oatmeal cardigan. Long, soft, forgiving of everything, including me.
  • Brown leather loafers. Resoled once. They look better at year six than year one.
  • One thin gold necklace, which I have not taken off since 2019 including in the ocean.
A uniform isn’t a lack of imagination. It’s all the imagination I have, spent somewhere other than the closet at 7 a.m.

Why it works

Because I already know it works. That’s the whole thing. I know how it looks sitting down, at the school pickup, in a photograph someone takes without warning. There is no small anxious calculation happening in the background all day.

When I need to look like I made an effort, I swap the tee for a striped long-sleeve and add the earrings my mother gave me. That’s the dressed-up version, and nobody has ever noticed it’s the same four other pieces.

What surprised me is that I like getting dressed more now, not less. The two minutes are calm. I put on the same things and I go and live the day, and the day is where the interesting part was all along.

I finally bought jeans that fit the body I have

Not the body I had at 32, not the one I keep meaning to get back to. The one carrying the groceries in right now. It took me a whole afternoon and it changed my whole spring.
